More on Miss World Final 2010:
This year’s Miss World event
returns to China, with the final set to take place on Saturday
30th October in the city of Sanya, located in China’s Hainan
province.
Contestants from over 120
countries will be competing in Miss World’s 60th Final which
will begin Miss World’s diamond anniversary year. A busy, four
week itinerary is being planned for the contestants across the
whole of China, culminating in the live, televised Final in the
forever tropical paradise, Sanya.
Miss World is the longest running
event of its kind. Launched in 1951, it has become the world’s
most watched annual event, with a worldwide viewing audience of
over 1 billion. Miss World is a celebration of beauty, fashion,
talent and culture as contestants tour the host country
supporting charitable causes, participating in spectacular
events and visiting the local attractions.
2010 will be the fifth time that
China has held the Final, after successfully hosting the 2003,
2004, 2005 and 2007 events. Miss World has been credited for
producing a rapid surge in Sanya’s tourism. The unprecedented
rise in tourism has been describe by former Mayor Lu as the
“Miss World effect” .
Chairman of Miss World, Julia
Morley commented “We are delighted to be returning to China for
Miss World 2010. Miss World has a special relationship with
Sanya and there is no better place to begin our 60th year
celebrations”.
Reigning Miss World - Kaiane
Aldorino will crown her successor on Saturday 30th October at
the beauty Crown Theatre . She said “China is a magnificent
experience and I look forward to welcoming all the contestants
to this tropical paradise.
23rd July 2010
Inner Mongolia will welcome Miss World in October
Although the 2010 Miss World Final will be celebrated in Sanya,
this is just one of the many exciting and interesting
destinations that will play host to the contestants as part of
their month-long tour of China. After their stay in the capital
of Beijing, the Miss World representatives will travel to Inner
Mongolia to the city of Ordos.
Chairman of the Miss World Organisation Julia Morley: “Ordos is
a new destination for us and a new development for China, with
the local government dedicated to creating green urban spaces,
planting beautiful pine trees throughout the city. It is also
famed for its history, its association with Genghis Khan of
great interest. Furthermore, Ordos offers a distinct change of
location from Sanya, as Miss World loves to meet different
cultures and learn from them.”
Although the history and culture of the region date back many
thousands of years, Ordos City is a fast-growing metropolis,
with over 1.5 million inhabitants. Surrounded by a dramatic
landscape of deserts, hills and plateaus, and encircled by the
Yellow River, Ordos is also home to the mausoleum of the
legendary Genghis Khan. In fact, “Ordos” is a Mongolian word
meaning “palace complex” in Chinese, and was originally the name
of the tribe who guarded the tomb. Many Mongolian traditional
rituals, crafts and activities are still practiced to this day,
recognized as national art treasures and as part of an important
cultural heritage.
FACTS ABOUT SANYA HAINAN ISLAND
Hainan is the smallest province in the People's Republic of
China and the largest of its Special Economic Zones.
Sanya's nickname of "the Hawaii of China" stems from its
latitude being almost level of that of the US island state,
thereby sharing a similar tropical climate.
The
Guan Yin of the South Sea of Sanya is the fourth tallest statue
in the world, with a height of 108m.
Sanya
hosted the first leg of the Beijing Olympic Torch relay on the
Chinese mainland in 2008, with Miss World 2007 Zhang Zilin one
of the chosen torchbearers.
The
official flower of Sanya is the Bougainvillea and the official
trees are the Royal Poinciana and the Tamarind.
The
earliest inhabitants of Hainan island were the Li people, who to
this day are known for their unique music and dance, as well as
intricate fabric design.
Local
delicacies include Wenchang Chicken, seafood and shellfish, and
various tropical fruits, particularly, pineapple, and coconuts.
The
Beauty Crown Theatre was specifically built for the 2003 Miss
World Final, the first to take place in Sanya, and will once
again host the Miss World Final in 2010.
Just
west of Sanya lies Tianya Haijiao, considered the southern-most
point in China, its name meaning "Edges of Heaven, Corners of
the Sea".
Nanshan Mountain, near Sanya, was also known as Ao Mountain in
ancient times, taking its name from a legendary giant turtle
which it resembled in shape.
Sanya
is also known as the "City of Deer", based on a local legend
immortalized in a statue in Luhuitou park, overlooking the city.
After
successfully hosting Miss World 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2007
events. Miss World has been credited for producing a rapid
